My husband gave me a keyboard. I never touched it. Now I practise on it for an hour every day.

At seventy, after losing her husband to cancer, Usha Shekhar of Bengaluru began to sing. At her first contest she could not get a single syllable out. Three years on, she practises for an hour every day.

In her own voice (test clip)

I listened to songs during my school and college days, as there were no other forms of entertainment. I had to take my grandfather's permission before switching on the radio, and he would check my homework first. I never dreamt that one day I would be singing.

I started singing at the age of seventy, a little over three years ago, when I was battling within myself to cope with the grief of losing my husband to cancer.

An ex-colleague sent me a link for a senior citizens' group, which I joined with a great deal of diffidence. Of all the sessions in the group, I was drawn to the one on learning to sing.

Every week our Guruji taught us a Bollywood song. Each member got to sing one antara in the online session, and Guruji would correct our mistakes. Then we had to sing the whole song with a karaoke track and post it in the homework group — another homework, after retirement.

My early posts drew comments from Guruji: off-beat, pitch drop. It took me time even to understand what these meant. But gradually, and surely, I began to make progress.

Then a singing contest was announced in the group. I sent my entry enthusiastically and was selected — my first victory after retirement.

But on the day of the contest, I lost my nerve. The host gave me several chances, and I could not sing even a syllable.

Without getting disheartened I continued with my lessons, and in the next season I won a trophy along with four others. I was thrilled like a child.

Then came the phase of swarabhyas. I remembered a keyboard my husband had gifted me years ago, which I had not bothered even to touch. I learnt the basics of playing it with the help of YouTube. I use it now for riyaz, at least an hour every day.

I wish I had learnt classical music in my student days. I would have understood the nuances better, and would be more confident of my singing today. But it is still not too late. I will learn the ragas one by one and keep practising.

NAVRAS came out of the blue, when a singer friend sent me a link to vote for her. While voting I found a button for entering the contest, and excitedly sent in my song. I got no place in the Darbar, and I am still content with having taken part, and with being one of this Sur Sangam family. I learnt so much simply by listening to the fine singers in the contest.

Though I live alone, my family has grown big — singer friends of every age group across India. We talk, we laugh, we giggle, and we forget our age.

I want to mention one person who, for some reason, bonded with me from the very first day. He rang every day to make sure I was all right, and he helped pull me out of the depression I was in. The name does not matter. I am indebted to him.

Friends, nothing is impossible so long as you pursue your passion with a never-say-die attitude. At our age we do not need to do anything to impress others. Let us do what makes us happy and keeps us productively engaged. Let us keep our spirits high — and let nobody steal the smile from our face.

I will close with something our music Guruji said, which I find very meaningful:

"Whatever you are learning at this age — whether it is music, or painting, or yoga — you may wonder what use it is. Whatever you learn, learn it with intensity and devotion, because this is the capital of your next birth."

I firmly believe this. How else can you account for child prodigies?
